Practical List Building Tips - Can You Use Twitter For List Building? (Here Are 2 Powerful Ways)
By Jeff Herring

The Internet is still buzzing about the power of Social Media. But the question remains: can you use Social Media for practical things like list building, traffic generation, and profits? The answer is yes to all three, and in this article we are going to focus on how to use Twitter for list building. Let’s take a closer look:

First of all, a word of warning: Twitter, and all of Social Media, is not the Holy Grail. They are tools, just like anything else. And when used properly and creatively, they can be one of the many tools you can use to building your list, generate traffic, and create profits for your business, online or offline.

Your Twitter List

It’s a little a funny when people ask me “Can Twitter help you build your list?” Usually I ask “Do you have any Twitter followers?” When they answer yes I point out that your Twitter followers are part of your list - your Twitter list.

I guess some folks think that just because someone from their Twitter followers is not on their email list means they are not a part of your list community. This could not be further from the truth.

Your Twitter followers (your Twitter list community) is a viable list that is just as important as your email list, and in many ways more so. With your Twitter list you do not have to worry about spam filters and you can communicate with your Twitter followers several times a day.

Your Email List

By sending a “tweet” inviting my Twitter list to one of my opt-in pages to get more good information from me in exchange for their email address, I build my email list everyday with Twitter. I recommend you do the same thing each day on Twitter.

You can learn more about how I use Twitter to build my list, generate traffic and create profits by following me on Twitter at http://JeffonTwitter.com

I often share tips first on Twitter, and sometimes exclusively on Twitter.

How to Gain Twitter Followers While You Sleep

How to Gain Twitter Followers While You Sleep
By Dave Greenlee

Twitter has quickly become one of the most visited sites on the internet. We all know that in order for people (traffic) to see what you have to say or what you have to offer, you need to have Followers. With Twitter, a Follower is simply someone who will receive your “tweets” or your messages as you post them. So, what I’m going to do today is give you one VERY effective way to gain followers even while you sleep. For some of you this may be old news, but for those of you just getting started, you can literally end up with 2,000 followers in a week without software that Twitter will frown upon.

First things first, get an account. This is probably the easiest account I’ve ever set up in my life so I’m not going to walk you through it. You should choose a user name that is YOU or the same as your Blog. I have two, one of me and one that corresponds to this blog. This is going to help you later in your internet marketing career as you get more in touch with SEO (Search Engine Optimization). You are making it easier for the Search Engines to find more relevant content about you and/or your blog so you can get higher natural rankings! This is a good thing.

Next, set up a picture. DO NOT use the standard issue picture that Twitter gives you. This is how people know you’re not for real and/or you’re just going to be spamming them all day. Find a nice picture that ties into the rest of your theme. This is the beginning process of Branding YOU. If you notice, I’ve got the same picture on Twitter, Facebook and this Blog. It’s like a nice suit being pulled together by the shoes. Okay, that’s a joke but just do it, you want that picture to be recognized and affiliated with you and all of your great content.

After you’ve got your account set up it’s time to get to work. You are going to visit 2 different sites to get your Twitter page customized for YOU. The first is http://www.twitterimage.com where you can get free twitter backgrounds. This is going to help fit right in with the rest of your theme and give people the idea that you take your business seriously and you are going to be giving professional stuff here.

The next is http://www.tweetlater.com. This site will allow you to automatically set up an auto welcome. So, when someone decides to follow you, they get an automatic response from you that says whatever you want it to say. This should be something nice and inviting, you are NOT selling them anything with this message, just saying hi and thanks.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Most people have this feature and will also have it set up to automatically follow you in return. So what you’re gonna want to do next is find 3 people per day that are in your industry, market or you otherwise just think are badass. After you follow them, go through 3-5 pages of their followers and follow those who you have something in common with. Don’t do more than 3 people per day and don’t do more than 5 pages of followers per person. Fly under the radar and you’ll be just fine. Not only will you be fine, but you’ll end up with 100+ followers in a day or so!

So there you have it. This is what I talk about when I say give valuable content. You can have your Twitter account set up RIGHT NOW and generating followers in a matter of one hour. Do the math yourself. How long will it take you to get 2,000 followers if you are consistent with this approach each day. In marketing, it’s all a numbers game, the more eyes the better. I hope this helps you on your Journey. Until next time, Happy Marketing!

Twitter - Delete Your Followers!

Filed under: Twitter — admin @ 6:34 am

Twitter - Delete Your Followers!
By Joshua Hays

Do you remember the days when it was a daily occurrence to get spammed on MySpace? I was frequented by at least two sex bots, four bands and an empty profile almost every day. These are issues that made Facebook what it is today. Facebook has stronger filtering systems and a more difficult registering process that help to remove computer programs that create random profiles for God knows what purposes. As both of these sites matured, a new service arrived that is most commonly known as Twitter.

Twitter emerged from an age where Facebook was eating the MySpace footprint but it still seemed as if the percentage of people who logged on and stayed on continued to drop. What do people visit these pages for anyways? A recent study indicated that a whopping 81% of people that have a profile on MySpace or Facebook primarily log on to check for new messages, update their status and browse recent bulletins (or wall posts if you are a Facebook user). Twitter targeted the most common reasons for visiting these sites - updating your status. It seems, though, that spam bots are at it again and targeting people by simply ‘following’ them. So, what sort of harm could this do to you? After all, it only adds to the number of followers you have, right?

As social networking grows to be one of the first source employers are turning to for information on potential hires, business to consumer connection and personal branding, it is incredibly important to maintain your ‘Big Three’ on a daily basis. When I say maintain, I don’t mean to just check for new messages or tweets, I mean to actually maintain your profile. Now more then ever, it is imperative to ensure you are not what I like to call a ‘follower whore’. Younger generations love to build their number of followers and do whatever it takes to have more ‘friends’ than the next person, regardless if it is a real person with valuable input or not.

I suggest that with every new follower; take the time to do the following:

1 - Review their profile.

2 - Read recent tweets and consider there value to you.

3 - Look for how often they tweet.

4 - Check the number of followers vs. following.

5 - Decide to follow them or not.

6 - If necessary, delete.

Let’s break that down. If you cannot take the time to review someone’s profile who took the time to follow you, you are not considering what others could bring to the table that may improve whatever it is that you are doing. Take a look at their recent tweets and if they post things that are interesting, compelling or even funny - follow them! By looking at their tweets you can also tell if they are spamming advertisements, are a real human or not and even see how often they tweet. You do NOT want to follow someone who tweets every two minutes! This will only make it more difficult to filter your tweets whenever it is you login and if you have every tweet texted to your mobile device, I sure hope you have unlimited texting! After that, quickly take a peak at how many followers they have versus how many people they are following. If they are following 10,000,000 people and have only 9 followers…. there’s a problem - they obviously don’t have anything valuable to offer anyone.

At this point, you should be able to properly determine if you should or shouldn’t follow them.

“So, why would I delete someone?”

If someone (or something) is following you and you don’t see a relationship there or you aren’t Ashton Kutcher, delete them. I know that it may seem really neat to have a large number of followers displayed on your Twitter homepage but what isn’t cool is when someone of importance (future employer, business partner, investor or client) decides to browse your followers to see what type of people felt your updates were of value and sees nothing but spam/porn bots. There are three points here. First, don’t accumulate followers who do nothing but follow and second, don’t be the follower that gets deleted. Offer value in your tweets, have fun with them and add personality. If used properly, Twitter can be a great place to meet new people, learn new things and promote you and/or your business. Finally, maintain what I call your online portfolio. Log into these websites daily and update your content, create something fresh for other people to enjoy. After all, networking requires more than just yourself - that’s why it’s called Social Networking.

If all else fails and you love bots, do yourself a favor and mark your profile and tweets as private.

Do You Tweet? Twitter Observations

Do You Tweet? Twitter Observations
By Lyn Prowse-Bishop

If you don’t understand what that title means, the answer is probably no! It seems that what started out as something a CNN journalist inaccurately described as “a place where teenagers were posting what they were doing throughout the day, from the cereal they were eating to the movies they were watching”, Twitter has grown into a Twitosophere of over one million users.

So what is Twitter? In a nutshell it can be described as an instant communication tool/microblog where users post a 140 character maximum answer to the question ‘What are you doing?’ I decided if I was going to give Facebook a go, I might as well try this too! Besides, loads of businesses I knew were already Tweeting!

In today’s fast-paced, instant information society, the sad reality is ‘you snooze, you lose’.
Like most business people I’d heard a lot about Twitter and wondered what it was all about. Just another time waster? Another social networking site for bored teens? I saw more and more of my colleagues joining and wondered ‘How do they have the time?’

I took my first tentative steps into Twitter not long after joining Facebook. At first I was overwhelmed … then slightly scared! The amount of followers I was attracting and in such a short time was a little disconcerting … surely I’m not that interesting! I also had the same lamentation as other non-tweeters: “I don’t have the time”, “I’ve got better things to do”, “Any potential clients will think I’m a time waster if I’m seen on Twitter all the time”.

I did some reading, visited blogs, looked at what my followers were posting and made a few tentative posts of my own. Before I knew it I was off!

According to Deborah Micek (author of the Twitter Handbook and Secrets of Online Persuasion), “Twitter is a powerful tool if you only use it to stay connected with your clients. But it can be used a number of additional ways to make your business life easier, better and more connected … from attracting new clients to making powerful, new connections”.

It’s been an interesting journey so far and in the first month I learned a few things that might be useful to share. So here are my Twitter Observations for anyone considering joining … and perhaps even for those who are already Tweetaholics!

  • Use a program like Twhirl or TweetDeck or an Outlook add-on like TwInbox to help you deal with tweets - your own and others. These are desktop applications that are great time savers and are terrific for setting up searches.
  • Don’t just post links to your business tools.
  • Don’t DM people with free downloads from your site - unless they’ve asked for it. You’ll quickly get a reputation as a spammer.
  • You don’t always have to answer the question ‘What are you doing?’
  • Don’t know what to say? You can include links to your blog posts. If you find an interesting article, tweet that with a link. See what others have said and if you like it, retweet (RT) it. Look at what others are saying to get an idea of the types of things to tweet about.
  • If you’re using Twitter primarily for business networking, don’t just talk about what you’re having for lunch. Try to mix it with useful tips and resources - not just from your own site or your own products but others you find. It’s okay to include personal tweets to let people get an idea of who you are as a person - since we all know ‘people do business with people they know and like’ - but there should be balance.
  • Be helpful - not self-promoting.
  • When you get new followers acknowledge them. A good way to acknowledge them is on #followfriday - this is when you Tweet something like - “Good tweeps to follow: @execva [a few others] #followfriday” - Your followers really appreciate the attention and the fact you’re bringing them to the attention of others.
  • Twitter is about being personal - never use an automated direct message (DM) to acknowledge followers. An automated message is pretty obvious and very impersonal.
  • You don’t have to automatically follow everyone back who follows you. When you get new followers, take a moment to check out their profile to get a feel for who they are and what they tweet.
  • Find people to follow by searching for topics you’re interested in, your industry or region.
  • Find people to follow by checking out who’s following your followers!
  • When your response tweets become back and forth conversations between you and one other Tweep take it DM. It’s annoying for your followers to only receive half the conversation when replies in some cases may only be one word. Remember you and your other Tweep may not have the same followers. You don’t have to reply tweet all the time.
  • Turn off - or better yet don’t use - the Twitter Facebook application. It annoys the heck out of your Facebook friends and you clog their newsfeed with occasionally seemingly nonsensical or, to them, apparently banal tweets and retweets.
  • ANSWER people who go out of their way to DM you or reply to your questions. You’re trying to build relationships, not listen to yourself tweet!
  • Remember people are in different time zones. You may get a response to a tweet but it’s WAY down on the list in the morning. This is when setting up a search of your own name or Twitter ID is useful as it will help track down tweets you should respond to or be aware of.
  • Don’t try and read all 300 tweets you get up to. Just the first 10 or so is enough for anybody! Again, here the search function of desktop applications like Twhirl and TweetDeck are great.
  • Be careful about following people with 10s of thousands of followers - they may follow you back but are probably more about self-serving tweets than anything else. (See ‘popularity contest’ note below.)
  • Some people use Twitter primarily as a way of ‘hearing the sound of their own tweet’, tweeting but not really interested in the response. You learn who these Tweeps are pretty quickly.
  • It’s easy to think that Twitter is a popularity contest - more about the number of followers you have than the quality of your tweets. This becomes apparent when you see Tweeps with 50,000 plus followers who are following back 49,900 of them. I mean seriously, do these people actually read all the tweets they’re getting from those 49,900?? Doubtful. It becomes apparent how Tweeps are using Twitter when they post things like “Hey check out my ranking on twitterholic.com” If you’re using Twitter for business focus on quality, not quantity. (The Twitter powers-that-be recently decided to limit bulk follows to 1000 per day … perhaps they’re realising Twitter is morphing into a serious business networking tool!)
  • Set aside time once a day or once a week to tweet. I find once a day is best as I can keep on top of anything happening currently and with an application like Twhirl running in the background (in my system tray) I get pop up notification of tweets and can quickly see if anything is pertinent and relevant.
  • #followfriday is an example of a hashtag. It helps Twitter determine what’s called trending topics. Google ‘hashtags’ to find out more.

You can make some seriously good connections on Twitter. It’s not just for bored teens instant messaging each other about what they’re wearing, eating or doing. Use some of the Twitter Tools out there to help you stay productive. Twitter is fast becoming the next big thing … and it’s loads of fun too!

How to Market on Twitter by Tweeting Great Content - Don’t Run the Risk of Being Un-Followed

How to Market on Twitter by Tweeting Great Content - Don’t Run the Risk of Being Un-Followed
By Yolanda Allen

Twitter has become a major force in the social media landscape. And it has become a powerful resource for marketers. But there is a paradox with marketers using Twitter. Social media is about socializing and connecting with others who share your interests. Yet marketers have found that social media sites like Twitter are a great resource to connect with their target audience. So how does a marketer socialize and market on Twitter?

How Do You Market On Twitter?

It all comes down to marketing strategy. Marketers have to remember that socializing comes first when it comes to Twitter (and other social media sites). If all the marketer does is tweet marketing messages, their followers will feel like they’re getting spammed. And the first thing someone will do if they feel like they’re getting spammed is un-follow you. Good bye target market.

A marketer has to share, i.e., tweet, great content with their followers. Your tweets should be 80% content, such as sharing useful information and experiences, and starting conversations with people. The other 20% of your tweets can be marketing related. Sharing content your followers find interesting and useful will establish you as someone who can be trusted, and build your credibility, and authority.

Where Do You Find Stuff To Tweet?

One place is StuffToTweet.com. This website lists popular and interesting articles, videos, how-to’s, and recipes.

You can also tweet:

  • News from online newspapers
  • Articles from article directories such as EzineArticles.com and GoArticles.com
  • How To’s from how-to websites such as HowToDoThings.com, EHow.com, and WikiHow.com
  • Content from social bookmarking sites like Digg.com and StumbleUpon.com
  • Commentary from blogs
  • Quotes, inspirational sayings, and quips

Do a Google search for these different types of media and you’ll find plenty of options.

You can also find content by using Google Alerts. Tell Google what topics you are interested in and Google will send you an email with a list of content for that topic.

How Much Should You Tweet Each Day?

You should tweet throughout the day, keeping the 80/20 rule in mind. But let’s get real. Who wants to be tied to Twitter all day? Granted there are some people who love to be on Twitter all day, but most people are too busy and staying on Twitter all day is impractical.

So what should you do? Use a service such as SocialOomph.com, which use to be called TweetLater. SocialOomph allows you to schedule your tweets throughout the day, week, or month. It’s easy to do. Just write your tweet and schedule the time and date you want your tweet to go out. The service is free.

Conclusion

Effectively marketing on Twitter is about tweeting great content. With the right mix of socializing and marketing, you can successfully market on Twitter.

Happy Business Building,

Yoli

Twitter Success Series - Choosing Your Twitter Username

Twitter Success Series - Choosing Your Twitter Username
By Matthew Duggan

When choosing your Twitter username, go for something that is either your actual name or something that describes what you offer. It depends which one you want to push more. Do you want to create more profile for yourself or promote your cause? Are you looking to make yourself into a brand or make yourself the ‘go to’ person for one thing?

In my case, I went with Matthew_Duggan (MatthewDuggan without the underscore was already taken). I could have also have gone for something along the lines of LondonActor or SocialMediaGuy but when I set it up, I wanted to push my profile more than just my job title. As an actor, I’m aware that my profile is quite important to my success in my chosen business, so I decided to go for a variation on my own name rather than say, LondonActor. I also know that people buy people first and knowing my name is the first step of them getting to know me.

While you’re deciding, let me give you a few tips on names:

  • Go for something memorable, whether it’s your name or what you do.
  • Only use your business name if you want to create a brand for a large multi-national company on Twitter. If you’re just on there to promote yourself and your small to medium business, using a corporate name will confuse people and most probably put them off following you.
  • Don’t use random or ‘wacky’ names like coolbeans1994 or luvbug_2143 (both names that are registered on Twitter at the time of writing), especially if you’re not even going to bother filling out the biography information in your profile. It just looks odd and makes you really hard to find which can only be bad for business.
  • If you don’t use your own name, make your username something that people will think of when they think of your field of expertise e.g.: www.twitter.com/MsInternetMkt for internet marketing or www.twitter.com/GardeningGuru for gardening advice.

Twitter - Social Networking’s Next Advancements From Twitter

Twitter - Social Networking’s Next Advancements From Twitter
By Raymond Aaron

Social Networking is so new yet it seems like it has always been around. Wikipedia claims: “While it could be said that email and websites have most of the essential elements of social network services, proprietary encapsulated services gained popularity in the first decade of the 21st century.”

What are the next advancements coming from Twitter?

Twitter has been under pressure to allow users (”tweople”) to organize their followers. At the moment, every follower is in one long list. If you have a small number of followers (90% of Twitter users have under 100 followers) then you likely know them all and can easily find anyone by simply scrolling for a moment or two. So, it is not a problem.

However, there are also big players on Twitter who have millions of followers. That’s unwieldy. If a big player wishes to categorize them into different groups, there is no function within Twitter at the moment to do so.

So, Twitter is now beta-testing Twitter Lists. This will be a way to create categories (or Lists) and then invite your own followers or others’ followers to join your Lists. Indeed, you can even follow Lists and have Lists follow you. With time, the social networking world will figure out the best way to use this new feature and Twitter itself will make changes and programmers around the world will write programs to support Lists.

Twitter Lists is already quietly released but not fully functional. Watch for it. It will be a big enhancement and it will be very useful for many users on Twitter.

Twitter Success Series - Giving to Receive
By Matthew Duggan

By giving valuable, targeted information to your Twitter followers for free, they will see that you are a giving, generous kind of person. This will enforce the feeling that you are the person to talk to when it comes to your chosen subject or area of expertise.

Crucially, remember this: Your success in life and/or in business is a measure of how much value you create for people. If you’re not earning enough, you’re not putting your value out there to the world. You have value - we all do. You just need to put it out there to as many people as you can. This is key to your success. Everyone has value of some kind. We all have interests and expertise, no matter who we are. If you share that value with the world, the world will give value back to you.

So, what can you provide for your audience of potential followers? Are you an expert in your field? Can you provide inspiration for their work or lives? Can you make them laugh? Even giving the gift of laughter and inspiration provides value to your followers as proven by the remarkable story of Cake Wrecks.

Jen from the blog ‘Cake Wrecks’ is another person with a massive number of followers (670,452 as I type this) and yet I imagine that many of you reading this will never have heard of her or her blog (which, by the way, is a little work of genius). Her blog is simple and straightforward. It details ‘when professional cakes go horribly, hilariously wrong’ and contains photos and comments on some truly spectacular sponge-based nightmares. Her Twitter followers get to hear about extra details from ‘behind-the-scenes’ of the blog and can give feedback on her blog and Twitter posts in what is basically an extension of her main site.

Jen’s blog is funny and in a peculiar way, I would imagine it provides inspiration for the readers. Her readers - who I assume have a mainly culinary background - will see some of the ambitious designs that her fellow bakers have come up with and be inspired to create their own incredible designs (hopefully with more success than the wrecks featured on the blog). It also has links to other useful sites through adverts and other posts, all of which will pay Jen every time a visitor clicks them. By providing extra value to others (laughter and inspiration), others are giving her value in return (respect and cash!). The more she posts, the more credible her blog is. The more credible it is, the more people will visit it. The more visitors she gets, the more will click her ads. The more clicks, the more money she makes. Simple as that.

Twitter Gaffes - How to Lose 1000 Followers in 7 Days Or Less

Filed under: Twitter — admin @ 6:27 am

Twitter Gaffes - How to Lose 1000 Followers in 7 Days Or Less
By Jason James

Twitter has been criticized and mocked for being too conversational and casual. If you are a Twitter user, then you will have no doubt seen the odd tweet about what cereal Johnny ate this morning or what music Johnny is listening to right now. The creator of Twitter, in his infinite wisdom and mercy, limited each tweet (as posts on Twitter are called) to 140 characters.

So how can a platform where people go to tweet about their unremarkable lives also be useful for marketing purposes? The answer is not to approach Twitter as a marketer. Twitter is a social networking site and there are guidelines that your tweets need to follow in order for people to want to read your tweets and to keep following you. Your followers can unfollow you if at anytime they feel that you are not worth following which is why it is important to provide some sort of value with every tweet.

Here are a few ways to lose a lot of followers in a short period of time and/or how to garner little to no attention for each of your tweets:

  1. By constantly tweeting your affiliate links. People don’t join Twitter to be marketed to. People join marketing lists because there was something on the front end which enticed them to trade their name and email in return for information, or they purchased a product and ended up on a list. Even in marketing lists, where marketing emails are acceptable, it would not be appropriate to constantly blast out affiliate promotions. This is probably the easiest way to get people to unfollow you.
  2. By making your tweets about you and not your followers. It is common to use a service called Tweet Later to automate one’s tweets. For example, you can create a message that is automatically sent out to people immediately after they follow you. While it is convenient, it is not advisable to do so because people always prefer it if they get a personalized greeting rather than an automated one. Another mistake is to be selfish. Remember, well-known experts and celebrities have a massive number of followers on Twitter because their followers find value in their tweets, whether it be marketing advice, tips in their respective niches, or the feeling that they’re somehow involved in celebrity’s life. Since you’re probably not a recognized expert in your field or a celebrity, then you must find other ways to make yourself worthy of being followed. Tweeting about the weather or what you had for lunch may be interesting to you, but it won’t appeal to anybody else, so don’t do it.
  3. By being anti-social. What this means is that you shouldn’t just tweet into the Twittersphere. You should tweet to other people as well; Twitter is a social networking site after all. This ties into the previous point that you need to make it about your followers and not about you. You should not only provide value for your followers, but also engage them in conversation.

Twitter is one big social scene where you can meet people you would not otherwise have the opportunity to meet. By following the rules and guidelines of Twitter, you’ll be building strong relationships, and that’s the secret of achieving success with Twitter.
