Twitter: Splitting The Social Networking Audience In Two

Filed under: Twitter — admin @ 6:24 am

Twitter: Splitting the Social Networking Audience in Two by Lee Ardina

Twitter takes a single feature of Facebook, the status function, and transforms it to an entire social network. Basically, people can create an account and post their statuses on their page. Many people have turned to Twitter for good reason. For one, Twitter is a lot safer than its Myspace and Facebook counterparts. There are no real personal information as there is with Facebook and Myspace. Twitter limits posts to 140 words per post. Because each post is so short, it makes it really easy to make a post from a cellphone or Blackberry. This portability makes Twitter quite popular; third in the world in fact, in terms of social networking. Twitter’s maximum post length also makes it a concise type of social networking tool. It also makes it a fast one, in a society where time is money. Other people can subscribe to your statuses, much like a magazine, and they will be able to see what you post. However, the added benefit is that they only see what you want them to. Unlike Myspace, Twitter doesn’t require any information about contact, address, and what not.

Just as there are people embracing Twitter, there are people who criticize Twitter. These people complain about Twitters 140 word limit per post. Also, they complain that Twitter has no native photo uploading feature as Facebook and Myspace does. In this regard, many people consider Twitter a cheap imitation of Facebook and Myspace. Lots of people also complain about how there is no function to directly post on a friend’s profile. Thus, no conversations can be started, or at least, not with ease. Also, since there is a 140 word max, no long stories can be posted. If they are, the stories have to be broken into several posts, making the story difficult to follow and read. Because of Twitter’s simplicity, many people feel Twitter is a complete waste of time. They also feel it defeats the purpose of social networking, which is to build friends. Rather, they say, Twitter is the essences of the “me-culture”.

The people who embrace Twitter embrace it for its simplicity though. They see the other side of the argument: less information means less junk. Facebook is indeed filled with a lot of useless reminders, notes, and alerts. Twitter has simplified everything and thus made everything much easier to read. Also, Twitter’s word limit means that only the important things are posted. This point can also be argued by some, comically at that, that people often post the most mundane things on Twitter. For example, “Hi, I’m currently drinking orange juice.”

In conclusion, Twitter has divided the social networking group into two separate factions, those that like the shine and complexity of Facebook and Myspace and those that seek simplicity offered by Twitter. The type of social networker you are will ultimately determine which site you will use in the future.

Catching The Twitterbug

Filed under: Twitter — admin @ 6:22 am

Catching the Twitterbug by Mary Sutherland

Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey in 2006. Since then it has gained extensive notability and popularity worldwide. It is often described as the “SMS of Internet”.

Simplicity has played an important role in Twitter’s success. People are eager to connect with other people and Twitter makes that simple.

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service. We’ll explain what these are a bit later. It enables its users to send and read other users’ updates, better known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts up to 140 characters in length, displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers).

Twitter quickly caught on and it continues to grow in popularity at an alarming rate, as new users come on board. While it is a communication medium like email for example, it is used in an entirely different way. Twitter is more sociable and fun rather than practical. Understanding the main concepts and principles of Twitter can actually take a little while.

So we’d like to give you a beginners or a basic guide to what Twitter is and what Twitter does so you can get involved with this twitterbug craze.

As mentioned earlier, Twitter is a micro-blogging service. Meaning each Twitter user has their own little “blog” that they can simply add messages to. These messages can be anything up up to 140 characters in length. Not very big but you can pack a lot in these messages. You can also send messages these also limited in length to other Twitter users and they will then appear on their recipient’s blog. Each of these little messages is known as a tweet.

As well as adding tweets to your blog, sending them to other people or even reading other peoples Twitter blogs, you can also “follow” any Twitter User of your choosing. See, when you “follow” someone, their tweets will start to appear on your Twitter page. This is a way you can keep up to date with what all your friends, family and business contacts are doing in one place. By simply following your contacts and keeping an eye on your Twitter page you get to keep up to speed as it is live what everyone you know is up to.

When Twitter was first launched, the way you interacted with the service was by using the Twitter website. Now you can interact in virtually any way possible. Here are some examples, you can access your Twitter feed live from a variety of desktop applications meaning you don’t have to be logged into the Twitter website. You can also send and receive tweets via text (sms) message via your cell/mobile phone.

Twitter is part of a movement known as “life streaming” part of the aim is to simply reveal your actions and thoughts live as you go about your day. Initially people would add messages like “Just eating some cereal” or “Paying for gas/petrol”. Today such messages are understandably frowned upon however, the more interesting tweets are welcomed.

This is a good way of not just staying in contact with friends and family, but also learning about other people in quite a deep way. Some may feel it is a bit intrusive, but you decide what message you send. If you know what movie they’ve just watched or what they’re doing on the weekend you feel more of a part of their life. Twitter is as much about conversations and communication as just sending an email to someone as it is real time.

The best advice for a new Twitter user is to simply try it out and see if you like it. Some people love it, others loath it, however you won’t know yourself until you try it. Sign up for a free account, find your friends and “follow” them, then when you are ready get involved with the conversation. When they tweet, tweet back. Join up and become part of the twitterbug craze.

Twitter Safety - 4 Ways to Use This Top Social Media Site Without Compromising Your Personal Safety

Twitter Safety - 4 Ways to Use This Top Social Media Site Without Compromising Your Personal Safety
By Melanie Jordan

Maybe it’s because I have New York city roots, but lately my natural danger antenna has been going up as I see Twitter users–even some of the internet’s top gurus–making mistakes in their tweets (a message sent on the system for those of you who don’t know) that could compromise their personal safety.

Here’s how to avoid common mistakes and safely use this white hot social media tool:

1. Do not tell others that you are going out somewhere.

If you want to share some insight into your life, tell people that “you just got back from…” especially when people know at least the city and state you live in (or wherever you are in the world).

You’ll achieve the same purpose without telling someone your home may be empty.

2. Especially do not tweet that you are going away for the weekend or on a trip!

Yes, you probably have a great alarm system, but no need to invite people to test it. Also not a good idea to share with others that wives are likely home alone with kids while you are off on a business trip or speaking at a conference. I see this one all the time from some of the top movers and shakers in New Media and Internet Marketing.

Again, tell others who follow you what a great trip “you just came back from”.

3. Don’t let the world know if you live alone.

I recently noticed a follower of mine tweeting about a roommate canceling out on her, and asking if anyone knew of someone looking to rent a place in her city/state. A good-hearted person’s gesture that immediately set off an alarm in my head. I sent her a direct message about this, and she thanked me and promptly removed the message.

4. It’s about being sociable, not divulging every secret of your life.

I remember someone once telling me that having a web site is like having a billboard on the highway for passers by to check out. And on the internet, the Twitter highway has an infinite amount of lanes and cars whizzing by. So don’t tweet anything that you wouldn’t be comfortable with if it appeared on a giant billboard you would pass driving down a highway.

Twitter Trending Topics and Their Effect on Online Reputation Management

Twitter Trending Topics and Their Effect on Online Reputation Management
By Ehud J Furman

Twitter trending topics are a great way to know what is on people’s mind and what they are twitting about right now. The fact that these lines are being written on a Sunday morning, 12 hours after the airing of Saturday Night Live in the United States has a lot to do with “SNL” being a trending topic at the moment on Twitter, as many people are simply reacting to the popular sketch show.

SNL is television show broadcasted across the United States for over 34 years and as a result, a Google query for SNL returns 10.5 millions pages. The fact that SNL is a trending topic will not necessarily affect its Google Resume, but what happens to the web visibility of an unknown person or company that for one reason or another becomes a popular topic on Twitter?

The short answer: becoming a trending topic on Twitter for an unknown person or business could have an immediate and lasting effect on the way this entity would show up on search engines.

Trending topics on Twitter are often marked with hashtags (#) as the person who is originally twitting is interested in further input or the continuation of the discussion about the topic at hand. When explaining what a hashtags is wthashtag.com says, “Hashtags are a community-driven convention for adding additional context and metadata to your tweets, similar to how tags work for blogs”.

If a professional or a businesses that had limited visibility on the web becomes a trending topic on Twitter even for one hour, this would create thousands of hashtags, or essentially thousands of tags that a search engine would associate with that name. A business that becomes a trending topic for doing something negative could be facing a serious online reputation problem, as this negative association is not coming from one source but many. Although it is not a small company, AT&T is certainly feeling the affects of letting its customers down across the United States. Google #attfail to learn more.

Why Your Online Business Needs Twitter in 2010

Why Your Online Business Needs Twitter in 2010
By Jesse Grant

If you are sitting on the Twitter-sidelines, it’s now time to hop on board-Twitter just got a whole lot bigger. Here’s what happened: October 21st, 2009, Microsoft signed a deal with Twitter to include Tweets in real time in their search engine results.

And if that isn’t big enough for you, get this, not to be out-classed Google quickly followed suit. Straight from Google’s blog: ‘we are very excited to announce that we have reached an agreement with Twitter to include their updates in our search results….we look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months.’ What does this mean for us internet marketers? It means we better get our butts on Twitter right now.

First, there will be a lot more traffic going to Twitter. If you are in a specific market, and people are doing keyword searches, twitter feeds will now be showing up in search results. Thus, you best be putting keyword specific twitter posts up regularly or you will be missing a boatload of free traffic.

Second, this is real-time search. The internet has already shortened the gap between ‘event’ and news story release-but now, millions of tweets going directly from cell phones to indexed in search engines? That’s a whole new creature. What this means is that you can tap into the latest fads immediately by posting tweets on specific topics as they arise. You will be able to access millions of searches just by tweeting! This is a marketer’s paradise.

Further, you can leverage your businesses and blog posts a lot more efficiently now that Twitter is being indexed by the biggest search engines. Due to the viral nature of tweets, your links can be posted on many accounts in a matter of minutes, which will greatly increase your search results and exposure.

The bottom line: Twitter just became an even bigger player in the world of marketing. If you aren’t leveraging your business with twitter yet, you need to stop reading and start tweeting!

So You Have Joined Twitter, Now What?

So You Have Joined Twitter, Now What?
By Mike Denton Smith

Why should I bother with Twitter? How is 140 characters going to help my Online Busienss? You need to change your thinking about Twitter before it will help. It’s like the BNI motto: Givers Gain. If you want to look at the relationship of give to get its 10:1. But that 10% can be very big. You want to give your followers quality content. It is the same old story you have heard form me and others before. People come back to sites because they interest them and makes them feel better, smarted, informed, etc. Share your experiences and knowledge with your followers.

You won’t make new competitors of your followers. What if they do? As you know it takes a lot of dedication and effort to master the many facets of the Social Networking. Do not assume that everyone is better than you. Go and share the wealth of information your have.

How can you be a good tweep? Contributing to your followers and those that you follow. Quotes, experiences and news items. Start conversations, respond to others questions or just comment on someone else’s tweets. If these phrases are mysterious to you, go and read my other article titled; The Right Way And The Wrong Way To Use Twitter.

You sell on Twitter like every other form of selling. The same laws apply: you need to grab their attention, show them something of interest, inspire a desire for your product and have a call to action. Get your followers attention. You did not spend all that time sharing for nothing. It is out of habit that they pay attention to you tweets. The hardest factor in the formula is Interest. Your message does not go any further if you have not got your readers interest. A tweet is not very big to generate interest. So you will have to work on it. Your creative writing skills will be tested to fit Desire and Action into your tweet. AIDA has the four parts but three of them may not make it into your tweets.

What’s In It For Your Followers that will create interest. This is everyone’s thoughts and playing up to it will help your tweets. Show them WIIFM and you will have their interest. A benefit is always a good idea in your tweet. The time you invested on your relationships is where, now, it will start to pay-off.

This is your action plan for Twitter. 30 minutes everyday tweeting your information or retweeting other’s information. When you find someone good to follow check out his or her followers. Add 100 of their followers everyday. After 30 days of this routine and you not only will have over 3000 followers but followers with similar interests to you. Un-follow those that do not follow you back after a couple of days. Your focus for this first 30 days is good information for your followers. You can tweet quotes or if you are blogging, a great cross-marketing idea, tweet your posts. These are good first steps to help you make money and build your downline on Twitter.

How to Twitter With the Best of Them!

How to Twitter With the Best of Them!
By Darwin Farr

I recently got quite heavily involved in Twitter. It is one of the best social marketing tools on the internet. It has come into its own as a marketing tools for interacting with people from all over the world and as varied backgrounds as you can begin to imagine. It is fun to get to know people through this medium.

I am going to share with you some of the websites that have helped me to do better on the Twitter. These tools will help you build a presence on Twitter that will allow you to do most anything you want from obtaining information on a particular subject to promoting your online business opportunity. I do not recommend that you spam people. Trying to force or over promote your business opportunity will surely creator problems with many of the followers that you obtain. Twitter is for social purposes and interactions and should be used only for that purpose.

One of the most important tools is Tweetdeck. By signing up for a free account with Tweetdeck dot com you can have in one format all you need to interact with those you are following and the ones who follow you. Tweetdeck calls it “your personal browser for staying in touch with what is happening”.

The next tool that I would recommend is tr.im. Just type in your browser window the letters tr.im and the website will come up and show you how to sign up for a free account. This allows you to shorten the websites that you are sending people to and therefore allowing you to type more in your tweets and also to mask any affiliate websites or any other website that you may want to mask.

Twollo - pronounced t-wollo is a great tool that will allow you to find people on the twitter that have similar interests to you. All you have to do is type in a keyword and Twollo will follow people who have those similar interest for you. You can even tell it how many to follow. I wouldn’t recommend that you put too many at once. Twitter may penalize you for that.

The last tool that I would recommend would be socialoomph dot com. This tool allows you to auto respond to people who have followed you with a message that you design yourself. You can also tell it when to tweet for you in the future and what to tweet. Great tool to save you some time.

The combination of these tools will place you in a position to tweet with the best of them. The potential is hugh for anyone who wants to take the time and effort into establishing a presence on Twitter dot com.
