If you’re on Twitter you know what a powerful marketing tool it can be. But the key to success is finding and keeping followers. Here are 11 steps you can take to get more Twitter followers.

1. Create a great Twitter bio. One of the key factors in whether or not people decide to follow you is the quality of the information in your bio. If you have a relevant website, be sure to include the URL. You only have 160 chracters, as opposed to the 140 allowed in tweets, so use them well.

2. If you’re new to Twitter, create about 10 or so interesting tweets before looking for followers. You have to give people a reason to want to follow you.

3. If you find an interesting article on the web, tweet about it with a link. Because most links will be too long, you can shorten them by going to tinyurl.com. Simply paste in the old link and it will give you a new “tiny” link to use for free.

4. Tweet inspiring or humorous quotes. You can find a lot of great quotes that your Twitter followers will enjoy at BrainyQuotes.com

5. Tweet links to interesting videos from YouTube and other such sites.

6. Help others by re-tweeting their tweets. Many will return the favor, which will expose you to other people who may then decide to follow you.

7. Join the conversation. Reply to other people’s tweets, give them a compliment or thank them for sharing. These people may also decide to send you @ messages, which will also make their followers aware of you.

8. Thank people who re-tweet you. Just hit the reply button and send a thank-you note. If you don’t thank them, at least some of the time, they will probably stop re-tweeting you and stop following you.

9. Become active on Follow Friday. Each Friday, recommend some of your favorite tweeters to your followers by typing in #FollowFriday or #FF and then their Twitter handle, such as @JaneSmith. Others will do the same for you. This is a great way to get more Twitter Followers.

10. Follow all of Twitter’s rule about following and un-following. Don’t become too aggressive or your account will be suspended.

11. If you are marketing something, try to keep a ratio of about one marketing message for every 10 or so tweets. If all you do is try to sell people something, they will stop following you. Doing nothing but marketing tweets could get you labeled as a spammer, which could result in being banned. Remember Twitter is about being social first and marketing, if you do any marketing, second.

Can you fill up a teleseminar just with Traffic from Twitter? You sure can - read on to find out how.

I remember the first time I did it. I was setting up my next teleseminar. On a whim I sent out the first invitation on Twitter. The sign ups started to roll in. I quickly had several hundred people signed up before I even invited my email list.

Hmmm, maybe I am on to something here. Ever since, I’ve been experimenting and playing with different strategies for inviting prospects to a teleseminar. Some have crashed. Many have worked. Here are the ones that worked.

A few tips on using Twitter to fill up your Teleseminars

1. Twitter knows first - Invite your Twitter followers first, and use this language: “Twitter know first.” I use this all the time and people like the exclusivity of it. You can begin to invite listeners as far out as a week in advance using this strategy.

2. Twitter Traffic - Part of this is mindset. You must realize that when handled properly Twitter is a great source of Traffic. Many people have not gotten this yet. They think of Twitter as just a place to yak it up with friends. And you can do that on Twitter. You can also you it as a tremendous source of traffic for your Teleseminars.

3. Before the TeleSeminar - In the 3 days before your Teleseminar, you will want to step up your invitations on Twitter. You can type in your invitations by hand or use an scheduler like HootSuite.com or TweetAdderNow.com Because Twitter is so fluid, it’s important that you invite people several times a day. People are in and out of Twitter all the time, and if you only invite once a day many people will miss the invite.

4. Right Before the TeleSeminar - You can tweet like this: “2 hours until…” “90 Minutes until” etc. As with all your tweets, provide the link to sign up for or listen to the TeleSeminar.

5. The Incredible Power of RTs - RT stands for Re-Tweet, which is when some likes what you have tweeted and repeats for their list. Your Teleseminar invitations can quickly go viral on Twitter this way.

6. During the TeleSeminar - You can set up your “auto-tweeting” tool to tweet during the teleseminar that you are holding it right now and invite people. Your listeners can tweet about what they are learning and invite others as well. This can create a strong buzz and get people on your call.

7. After the Call - After the call, right after and for days after, you can invite people to the Audio Replay of your TeleSeminar. You are recording them, right?

It sounds so incredible I know, but you really can fill up a teleseminar just by using Twitter.

Twitter is fast becoming the preferred tool for companies and organizations to supply quick and easy updates to their customers. Registering an account for this service is free, so why not? How this works is, people who choose to follow a certain Twitter account – called “followers” – will see any updates that account posts. And they’re to the point too, with only 140 characters available for any single post.

Aside from regular or scheduled updates, blatantly plugging your Twitter account is one way for you to increase your Twitter traffic. There are a number of widgets online that enables you to place badges (images or buttons as a link) on your website or blog. A simple click will allow your visitors to also become your followers.

Another method that could help is by running a search using trends. On Twitter, trends are posts that have specific keywords. By clicking on particular trends, you will be shown all updates from other accounts that have posted within the same trend – usually noted by adding the “#” symbol prior to a word or phrase.

Following someone on Twitter will most likely get that person to follow you as well. At the least, it will rouse their curiosity enough to look at your profile. This is where your profile design comes into play. Make it interesting so people will feel compelled to follow you in turn.

Having only 140 characters to express any one thing can prove a challenge. Try to phrase your updates in as interesting a way as you can. Use humor or wit, whatever you have in your arsenal. Tweets – that’s what Twitter calls these mini updates – that incite laughter or thought could gain you more followers, if only for them to see other attention-grabbing Tweets you come up with.

On a side note, in trying to increase the number of followers on Twitter, it is important to remember that you do NOT lose any of the ones you already have. Make sure that you post regularly. Any lull in updates might make your followers think that you are no longer active.

Twitter was founded in 2006 by American software architect and business person Jack Dorsey. Since its creation, it has quickly gained a cult following and has grown exponentially in terms of notability and popularity on a global scale.

Twitter is best described as a free social networking and micro-blogging site; amalgamating the convenience of short text messaging and the ease at which information flow is facilitated instantly online. One can set up an account based on a niche or topic of interest, follow immediate friends and family for a start, scour the network for like-minded enthusiasts, begin with a tweet and they are away; it’s that simple! Jack described his product name as “a short burst of inconsequential information,” and “chirps from birds” and this fitted Twitter’s essence like a hand-in-glove.

One of the most impressive stand-outs of the platform is its applicability to a myriad of situations, including:

1) Education: Language teaching where students are asked to send tweets and also responses in the new language as a tool to train proficiency and cultural assimilation. CNN heralded this as “the day social media appeared to come of age” since many different groups made significant use of Twitter to gather news and coordinate responses.

5) Public Relations: UK’s Department of Business, NGOs, fire departments and even the US Army intelligence use Twitter as a means to develop communication strategies, incident reporting, counter-terrorist tools and even to hold worldwide conferences and webinars.

…and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Twitter ‘s practicality extends to many other innumerable situations.

In conclusion, Twitter is an extremely useful social media innovation where information flow - personal, casual or mass broadcast during time critical circumstances – can easily be transmitted and received. It also allows institutions to reach the public and relevant stakeholders about updates, developments, strategy and outlook. Brands can be built and images enhanced via content-rich and informative tweets. The ease of set-up and use also implies that anyone can be up and running within minutes. If one thinks out-of-the-box a little, making money through Twitter back-linking and free marketing via good tweets should also be easily achieved. All in all, Twitter is the epitome of social media innovation and its uses and implementations one can safely say, far extends beyond pure social net-working.

Social media, or Web 2.0, is all the rage. Since millions of people are flocking to the various social media, it’s a great opportunity for churches. We’ve been looking at the various forms of social media and how Church’s can use social media as part of their church marketing strategy and more importantly, use social media to share the message of Jesus Christ. My previous set of articles focused on the social networking site, Facebook. Today, I want to turn our focus to another social networking site, Twitter.

It’s a Blog. It’s a Facebook. No, It’s Twitter:
Twitter is currently the third most popular social networking site in the world. It’s kind of like a cross between Facebook and a blog. Instead of posting entire articles as you would in a blog, you post short messages, called “tweets”, that are 140 characters or less. Like Facebook, your messages get shared with all the people who are “following” you. Unlike Facebook, there are no ways to share pictures and videos, setup events, or personalize your Twitter homepage, like you can a Facebook Page. It’s all about the tweets.

Anytime – Anywhere:
One of the best aspects of Twitter is that it’s easy to use (not technical at all) and it’s able to be connected to your mobile phone. If you can text, you can twitter (though you can also tweet from your computer). So, unlike your blog, website, or even Facebook, you can tweet from anywhere. If you’re standing in line for a movie, you can tweet from there. If you’re in Paraguay on a mission trip, as long as you have cell service, you can tweet from there. If you’re in church listening to the sermon…well, maybe you should wait until after the sermon.

What’s The Point?
So, what can you do with a 140 character message? You won’t be writing an exposition on predestination or posting a sermon transcript. Twitter is self described as being about the everyday, the little things that you wouldn’t normally email someone about or blog about.

“Real life happens between blog posts and emails.”

On a personal level, Twitter helps you connect with people and get to know them better, by giving you a look into the everyday lives of the people you follow. It’s like adding details to a drawing. Even people that you see regularly have aspects of their lives that you probably are unaware of, whether it’s books they are reading, shows they watch, or concerns they have. Twitter helps people share those parts of their lives. That in and of itself could be beneficial for churches as it can help your congregation connect on a more personal level and help members of the congregation connect with non-members.

But there are more uses of Twitter for churches. From announcing upcoming events, to involving people in devotions, Twitter can be a useful tool for churches both in church marketing and in achieving the mission of your church. In the next few articles I’ll be talking a little more about Twitter and why your church should be Twittering.

Obviously this is a hypothetical scenario but my guess is, if you were to put these questions to a thousand Twitter users, by the time you had finished there would be very few hands remaining. Unfortunately, according to the rules of Twitter, this would mean you had a room full of spammers.

Before we go any further I should state that I did use Twitter until a few days ago when my account was suspended for spamming. I opened it to be greeted with this message;

This account is currently suspended and is being investigated due to strange activity. If we have suspended your account mistakenly, please let us know. See Suspended Accounts for more information.

Assuming this to be an easily fixable error, I looked into it further until I came to this message;

Your account was suspended for cross-posting duplicate tweets across multiple accounts, a violation of our terms of service and the Twitter Rules that we take very seriously. Your account will remain suspended for a minimum of one week; you may petition for reinstatement on or after August 17, 2009.

An obvious and blatant spamming tactic on my part, you may think, but the simple truth is; I only ever had one account. As frustrating as this situation may be for me, personally, it is nothing compared to the frustrations of Twitter, itself.

I have to admit that, according to the rules of twitter (which I have now read), I was not whiter than white when using it. In my short time as an account holder I came to the conclusion that most users (the ones that I was interested in following, at least) were tweeting, either from or about their work, personally posting links and pictures on their page that they believed their followers would be interested in. I followed suit believing this to be a good use of twitter as generally speaking, our work is what people would be most interested in. If Stephen Fry, for example, were to talk about the weather or the lovely cup of tea he was drinking (being extra careful not to mention the company who manufactured it) who would be interested? We want to know about his work because that is what is interesting about him. As for the rest of us mortals, because our jobs may not be as interesting to most as Mr. Fry’s, we look for people in a similar line of work to ourselves to banter with and share information. If we are not to discuss what we do, how are we to find these people?

This could prove a difficult area for Twitter to police. Once you have read the rules on spamming, in particular, you realize that, if all of them were to be upheld to the letter, they would have very few users left indeed.

There is talk of Twitter Business, a service that will allow people to advertize what they do without fear of persecution. But will anyone use this as a social network? More likely, people will only use it if they are looking for a specific service. So, a search engine, then, which only allows the advertiser 140 characters to explain what they do in order to sell their wares. This will leave the advertiser with only one real option; to put up links to somewhere else where he can go into more detail about his product or service. The links would, more than likely, be to a website… Which has to beg the question; Why not cut out the middle man and just use a search engine instead?

This is probably the conclusion most people (and most spammers, for that matter) will come to once the hype dies down a little so lets hope that it is not the way Twitter plans to monetize itself or it will probably have a lot of disappointed paying advertisers on its hands.

So, if Twitter Business doesn’t seem likely to be viable in the long term, we are left with, plain old, Twitter; a social network where people are not allowed to publicize what they do for fear of being suspended.

It does go without saying that none of us enjoy receiving spam and that Twitter has to do something to prevent it, lest people will stop using the service. But, if it is to be trusted by its users, it cannot be suspending them for cross posting duplicate tweets across multiple accounts without first checking that these users are actually guilty of the infringement. If they continue to do so then the current suspension policy will ultimately achieve the opposite of its objective.

Though my Twitter account has now been reinstated, I now cannot escape the feeling that trying to rebuild my social network would be, at best, humiliating and at worst, just pointless, knowing, as I do, that Twitter could close it at any moment due to circumstances that are neither my fault nor within my control (if they actually exist in the first place). And so it is for these reasons, I will probably not use my account as much as used to and would certainly not have opened a new one had the original not been reinstated as I (and, I suspect, my erstwhile followers) would have seen this as an admission of guilt.

Much more importantly for Twitter, however; if I were a dyed-in-the-wool spammer, do you think the suspension of one account would offend so badly as to deter me from opening new ones? I would imagine that a real spammer would be back the very day after his first suspension with a virulent vengeance.

In short; the wrongfully convicted may never return whilst the genuine spammers will simply grow two new heads for each one that is severed.
