Is Twitter As Popular As We Are Led To Believe?

Is Twitter as Popular as we Are Led to Believe? by Melissa Kay

• Do you know that only 17% of all Twitter accounts tweeted in December 2009?

• Find out how many Twitter accounts do not have any followers, or even send out a single tweet!

• Learn who the core Twitter users are

Figures based on a recent report from RJMetrics, a company which develops online metric analysis software, have shown that Twitter may not be as popular as we are led to believe. There are actually less than 15 million active Twitter users worldwide out of 75 million registered Twitters accounts. In fact, research has shown that approximately only 17% of all Twitter accounts tweeted in December 2009.

But we have to also take into consideration the number of spam and machine bots that tweet up to 150 times per day to increase search engine optimisation. A quick search shows that more than 32% of all active Twitter accounts are made up of these machine bots. These bots mainly tweet about hotels offering good deals, news services, weather services, top news within Digg, games and many more.

If we choose to only concentrate on the percentage of total active accounts of real humans, the percentage of Twitter accounts that tweeted in December will be much lower.

Other data also shows that Twitter may not be as popular as we are led to believe. After all, up to 25% of all Twitter accounts do not have followers, and as much as 40% of Twitter accounts have not even sent a single tweet. In other words, 30 million Twitter accounts have never been updated. Further analysis also shows 80% of all users have sent out less than ten tweets. Not only that, the percentage of accounts sending out tweets has been on a steady decline over the past few months. These worrying figures show that many new users simply do not do anything with their Twitter accounts after signing up. These figures will surely deter any internet marketing firms from investing on Twitter as part of its social media campaign.

Despite these unexpected figures however, online marketing firms must know that Twitter is still growing at an unprecedented rate. In fact, if it maintains its steady pace of creating 6 million new accounts every month, the company should reach one hundred million accounts by early May.

Twitter has already made headlines with its current worth of one billion USD based on Twitter’s current private market valuation. This means each active account is worth at least $67. Not bad for a company that was once unflatteringly compared to Second Life, a virtual world that quickly faded into obscurity several years ago.

Not only that, those who have turned into core Twitter users have became increasingly engaged with the social media platform. A report from Sysomos last year has shown that the top 5% of the most committed Twitter users account for as much as 75% of all tweets. Statistics show that these core users are mostly employed in the area of technology and the media. They thus have the ability to instantly spread red hot news worldwide for as much as four hours before it hit the mainstream media.

Although Twitter may not be as popular as generally assumed, it is still widely regarded as an effective news feed platform that appeal to those who are generally more tech and information savvy. Anyone considering huge internet marketing campaigns should still consider Twitter as part of its social media engagement plans.

The Fast Way From Post To Google In Hardly 15 Minutes Via Twitter

Filed under: Twitter — admin @ 6:16 am

The fast way from post to Google in hardly 15 minutes via Twitter by Keith R Lunt

I wrote a post a short time ago about the emerging significance of social networking in search engine traffic and how important that is for getting excellent results. Particularly, I was looking at Twitter and why Google will be commencing to use Twitter to improve its own results.

That article was in reality part one of a series. And as though Google was trying to show a point, a point which was in concurrence with what I was writing, inside 15 minutes of striking the publish button in WordPress the Google bot had came to the brand new post and cached the site.

That, I suppose, is thanks to a trivial plugin that is embedded in my blog. I found a incredible plugin that automatically sends an update to my Twitter account every time I publish a post to my blog. A extraordinary find! It is one of many similar plugins to be had, but it did precisely what I wanted. Nothing more, nothing less.

It was miraculous that this new blog, which formerly I had struggled to get posts listed on Google, was swiftly having its posts listed in no time. And it is not the only one. A second blog is also reacting equally swiftly using the same system.

This does not signify that this little pluggin is the tremendous golden bullet that will get every post listed on Google in 15 minutes. Far from it. I also installed it into a third blog, devoid of the same accomplishment. But this is not a sign of catastrophe. In fact, it is a symbol that the system is functioning in a way that I expect it to and confidently I am following how they are functioning.

How to best use Twitter for publicising blogs is probably far more than the space outstanding here. In fact that area under discussion in itself is doubtless a couple of sessions and I’ll work through it over a couple of days in my own blog, if you are engrossed to follow it.

But the outcome of the speedy way that the blog posts have abruptly started appearing on these two blogs shows that there are benefits to be had by using Twitter in conjunction with a blog. It’s not just a matter of setting up a blog and a Twitter account and having done with it, there is a slight amount of work to be done on both. But it is trouble-free.

The point is, if you are a website owner and want to generate more visitors to your website, then these are methods you can use without any technical comprehension. Whether you be in command of the design of your website or whether you have paid someone like me to design and run it for you, depending on these methods you can make new interest in your products or posts and with any luck more sales through this added traffic.

This is what these social networking techniques are regarding, in my belief. They are not regarding paying a fortune to get traffic. They are on the subject of creating an interest in you that will arrive at your website prepared to buy from you. It is something anyone can do!

Learn How To Stay Clear Of Making These Deadly Twitter Marketing Mistakes

Learn How To Stay Clear Of Making These Deadly Twitter Marketing Mistakes by Emma Jackson

You might be using Twitter as a way to keep your customers and clients aware of what is is going on with your business. That is fantastic! But are your Tweets really getting you the results you want? It is very easy to make mistakes that could cause your marketing campaign to fail, and you never realize that you made them. You must be very careful not to make the mistakes that will be listed out in this article if you want to have true success at Marketing on Twitter.

One of the first mistakes that people make is not realizing that those they are marketing to have no sense of your business, whether it be the product, or the quality of said product. You need to remember that most of the people you are reaching aren’t all that impressed with your product and don’t have a lot of interest in how cutting edge your service is. These people automatically think of themselves first; they are not concerned at all about you. You could have authored the most beneficial software in the world. Even Ol’ Bill Gates could be quaking in fear. Your prospective customers who read your message only care about how your product or service will benefit them. So no matter what, your potential customers will always ask only one question – what’s in it for me? If you can answer that, then your Twitter campaign will work extremely well. Another marketing error that people make when they begin to use Twitter is that they attempt to be a bit too mysterious. IF no one can figure out who you are you’re going to be ignored. One way to clarify yourself is to create a biography that will hook your prospects, and include a photo so they could identify you. The first interaction you have with your prospect shouldn’t go in vain just because they couldn’t make you out. But you don’t have to be too serious. And yes, that is another mistake people commonly have with using Twitter. Twitter is a fun internet destination, somewhere where people come together and interact on a social level. They might be seeking a break from a hectic day, so you want to help them with that. You need to tweet with a little humor and spice. As they become more familiar with who you are, they will begin to care more about the product that you represent. Try not to be drab or boring.

You are not a big corporation, so don’t make the common mistake of using your company logo on your Twitter page. You have to have a human presence for people to identify with. You want to encourage them to identify with you, and the best way to do that is to be you, not just your brand. Your product or service will be better served if your followers feel that they have a personal stake in how successful you become. This may take some extra time and thought, but it will be worthwhile in the long run because people will respond favorably knowing that you are a real person. It’s important not to come off as a snob. If you make the mistake of appearing too aloof on Twitter your reputation is toast. It is a social platform that needs to be respected for what it is. Interact with other Twitterers here, connect with them and talk without having a promotional tone. Listen to your prospects, and try to help them with the problems they may have. If you want to be successful marketing your product or business on Twitter, then you really need to learn how to make personal connections and your followers will end up doing the entire campaign for you!

Just follow our advice above, and you should be able to utilize Twitter effectively. I just started a The Best Spinner, Learn and Master Painting course, and online dating tips twitter accounts and I’ve been able to drive a lot of traffic to my site from it. Take advantage of this free traffic and make some money from it.

Three Reason Why Google Buzz Beats Out Twitter

Three Reason Why Google Buzz Beats Out Twitter
By Brian Krassenstein

I have been a Twitter users for over a year now. I have come to love Twitter, using it every day both for personal and business reasons, and learning a great deal from the people that I follow. On a side note I also have a Facebook account and also use it a great deal as well. Having said this, after Google announced it’s latest creation in Google Buzz I have found myself slowly inching closer to Buzz than Facebook and Twitter. Here are 3 ways in which Google beats Twitter in a landslide.

#1 No More 140 Character Posts

I don’t know about you, but it’s very hard to say what you normally want to say with a 140 character limit without linking to the actual content, or using abbreviations to hope to convey the message to your followers. Google allows you to write as much as you’d like. Now you can say what you want without relying on url shorteners, third party websites and the hope of people getting your short hand type.

Images, Videos, Etc

Think about how Great Twitter would be if they allowed you to put images or videos or other content in your tweets. Well, That greatness just came to fruitation with Google Buzz. Just wait until Google starts allowing widgets within Buzz posts.

The Unlimited Possibilities

Anything Google does seems to be opened. This means that Third party developers can help in the development of the new product. Buzz is no different. You will see all sorts of crazy, some useful, some not, applications and ideas developed to work with Buzz. It will Certainly be a Game changer.

In conclusion, if you have not tried Google Buzz as of yet, you really should at least check it out. I have a feeling you will be pleasantly surprised at the way it works.

More information about Google Buzz can be found at the Google Buzz Forum.

Five Ways to Use Twitter to Promote Your Book

Filed under: Twitter — admin @ 6:24 am

Five Ways to Use Twitter to Promote Your Book
By Terry Cordingley

Do you currently use Twitter? If you don’t, you really should consider it. Those who aren’t on Twitter, even at my job, frequently ask me “just what IS Twitter anyway?” Basically, Twitter allows you to quickly send out short messages to your subscribers. The messages are 140 characters or less. That’s not a lot of space, so it really forces you to be concise and to the point.

I mainly use Twitter to link to articles and web sites that I think authors would find most helpful. Lately, I have also been using it to connect with members of the media, bookstores and book reviewers. If you think Twitter is a waste of time, consider this: each day, Twitter logs visits by six million different users. That’s the kind of exposure authors crave.

So, how can authors use Twitter to their benefit?

1. Give your Twitter readers something of value. If the majority of your Twitter posts say something like “Hey, read my book (Title). It’s available now at Amazon!” you’re not likely to get much, if any, response. However, if you frequently pass along useful information that can be found in your book, or you update your readers on your next project or pass along the location of your next book signing event, you’re giving your readers something other than a hard sell…and they will keep reading.

2. Use Twitter to make connections. I have used Twitter to connect with members of the media, bookstores and book reviewers. If I recently read a book I found interesting, I pass it along to my readers. If there is something going on in the news that relates to a book I’m currently marketing, I mention it on Twitter. Recently, I mentioned I had some new releases coming up and offered free review copies to book reviewers. I received replies from book reviewers that asked me to send copies. That’s a lot better than blindly mailing out review copies.

3 Use Twitter to plug upcoming appearances. As I briefly mentioned before, you can use Twitter to plug upcoming book signing events, or your upcoming media appearances, something like “Signing copies of my book (Title) at B&N on Smith Road in Nowheresville this Sat, 1 pm. ” If you have a lot of friends and fans subscribing to your Twitter page, you’ve just notified them all that you have an upcoming event.

4. Schedule a Twitter Chat with your fans. If there are areas of the country you’d like to reach, but can’t afford to fly out there for a book signing event, hold a Twitter Chat with your friends. You simply schedule a time to chat with your fans. You can coordinate this with your blog, or another popular book blog. At the scheduled time, you log into Twitter and your fans Tweet questions and messages to you, which you respond to. It’s sort of like doing a live Q&A, but you’re doing it on Twitter, 140 characters at a time. The best part: it’s nationwide! You can even have contests on Twitter, where you give away a copy of your book to whichever Twitter user posts the best review of your book on Twitter.

5. Use Twitter to promote your other social media content. Have you just written a killer blog post that others will find useful? Mention it on Twitter. In fact, I’ll be mentioning this post on Twitter as soon as it’s written. Not only will it draw readers to my blog, but it may also lead some blog readers to follow me on Twitter. You say you don’t have a blog? Tsk, tsk.

Twitter don’ts:

Don’t hard sell on Twitter. Just be yourself and pass along useful info that others will find interesting.

Don’t over post. A couple of posts a day is fine. A couple hundred posts a day is not.

Don’t get TOO personal. Remember, Twitter is public. If you wouldn’t want your boss or your kids to see it, don’t Tweet it. Be personable, but not overly personal.

Don’t be dull. If you don’t have anything interesting to Tweet, don’t.

Don’t ignore people who send you personal messages through Twitter, unless THEY are getting to personal.

Don’t forget to follow ME on Twitter! My Twitter ID is TerryCordingley. I often share info on Twitter that I don’t mention on my blog.

Promote Your Book on Twitter - Top 10 Strategies For Authors

Promote Your Book on Twitter - Top 10 Strategies For Authors
By Dana Lynn Smith

Twitter, the wildly popular micro-blogging site, is a great place to network with others and subtly promote your book. Here are ten ways authors can benefit from Twitter:

1. Help others by sharing information, while you gain a reputation as an expert. You can post links to helpful articles, recommend resources, and teach mini-lessons. It is okay to link to your own blog posts and articles, but don’t make that your main focus.

2. Meet potential customers and stay in touch with existing customers. Promote your Twitter URL everywhere you’re listed online, and include keywords in your tweets to attract followers who are interested in your topic or genre.

3. Stay on top of news and trends in your field, and get ideas for your own articles and blog posts by reading the tweets of the people you follow.

4. Promote your book by tweeting about live and virtual events such as book signings, podcasts, virtual book tours, teleseminars, and book launches.

5. Gain visibility and new followers by hosting a Twitter contest where you give away a prize to a randomly chosen winner, or give a free gift to everyone who follows you and re-tweets your contest message. See this article for tips on creating a Twitter contest.

6. Ask for help and get instant responses. When you request product recommendations, referrals to experts, or help with a technical issue, it’s amazing how helpful folks are.

7. Spread good will by promoting your peers. Introduce other people in your field or genre, or recommend other related books or products. Re-tweet interesting posts from people that you follow.

8. Promote your book and other products and services. The key is to be subtle and make promotional tweets a small percentage of your overall communications, so people feel like they gain value from following you, not just a stream of sales pitches.

9. Meet other authors, experts, publishers, marketers, and vendors. Twitter is ideal for networking and it’s a great place to meet potential joint venture partners that can help you promote your book.

10. Keep in touch when you’re on the road. There are a number of applications that facilitate twittering from mobile devices.

Have fun! It’s fascinating to meet people from all over the world, gain a glimpse into their lives, and develop a cyber-relationship.

Twitter Tricks For Generating Back-links

Twitter Tricks For Generating Back-links
By Atul Vhale

Twitter is one of the latest and greatest Web 2.0 apps and it gets tons of traffic. And I think twitter will best in 2010 for SEO professional. However, from the point of view of a SEO expert, it is more important that Twitter can get tons of traffic as well. So, if you still don’t have an account with Twitter, you’d better open one.

Twitter is simple to use and this is what made it so popular. Twitter is fashionable right now, so enjoy the moment. Even the creators of Twitter admit that as with MySpace and other Web 2.0 sensations, Twitter will inevitably go out of fashion some day, so hurry up and get some traffic for free now, when it is still all the rage of the season.

Twitter is simple to use, yet it is really powerful. You might need a couple of hours to get familiar with the basic functionality of Twitter and of some of the extras it has but you can harness its power, even if you don’t know it very well.

Unlike most of the other places you can get traffic for free, Twitter is a micro blogging platform, which means that there are restrictions on the number of characters in a message. Therefore, you need to be concise in your Tweets and use your space wisely. In addition to being concise, here are some more tips to help you get traffic from Twitter:

Twitter profile

Your profile and your username are the first two things your visitors will see when they go to your Twitter page. If your profile looks boring, people won’t bother to read your tweets, not to mention visit the links you post in them. You can’t write a very long bio of yours, but you can enter a few words about you - i.e. your occupation, your interests, etc. You can also include a couple of keywords in your bio.

Username

Your username is also very important. You need to pick a username that is targeted at your niche. For instance, if you are promoting your SEO services and want to drive traffic to your SEO site, you can choose something like SEOmaster, SEOguru, SEO services, etc. Your username will show in searches other users make and this is why you must pay attention to what you choose.

Your URL Or Blog in Profile

According to some statistics, 80% of tweeters don’t provide an URL in their bio! Well, maybe these people are not SEO experts/Internet marketers and they don’t need this traffic but you as a SEO expert can’t afford to miss it. So, don’t forget to include your URL in your profile!

Send the link to your profile to your friends

Your friends will be your most loyal audience, so if they don’t know about your Twitter page, make them aware of what they are missing. If you have their emails, or know their accounts on other networks, you can send a mass invite.

Search for Twitter users with similar interests

You might have millions of friends, but more followers are always welcome. That is why you can use the search functions on Twitter and find people with similar interests. Find as many as you can and invite the mall. These people might not be as loyal as your friends, coworkers, and acquaintances but still you will get hits from them as well. Some Twitter users report that about 1-2% of their followers visit their site a day, which means that if you have 1,000 followers, you might expect to get at least 10 or 20visits a day to your site. This response rate might seem low but there are ways to increase it.

Socialize on Twitter as much as you can

When you are active in Twitter, respond to the posts of your followers and visit their links, this seriously increases your chances that you will get the same in return. In a word, actively follow those that follow you.

Tweet regularly

As with all other kinds of media, if you want to keep your audience, you need to feed it regularly. Writing a short tweet takes just seconds, but it is enough in order to keep your followers happy. It goes without saying, that you should tweet about useful things, so if you don’t have something meaningful to post about you or your sites, it is quite OK to post a link to an article, a video, a blog, etc. you found on the Net and you like.

Don’t spam

You might feel that every single user on Twitter is interested in you and your blog/site but this is not exactly so. You might be tempted to make as many users as you can aware of your Twitter page and your latest tweets but you’d better refrain from doing this, unless you want to see if you can get a ban or not.

Take advantage of Twitterfeed

Twitterfeed is one more useful service you can take advantage of in order to increase your reach. Go to twitterfeed.com and configure your feeds.

Make Twitter Search love you

Twitter has a great search function and its main advantage is that it offers real-time results. Google might be fast in indexing pages but its indexing is not real-time. Users are hungry for hot news and nothing beats a real-time search. Many bloggers report that they are getting more traffic from Twitter than from Google and partially this is due to the fact that their tweets are popular and users find them with ease.

Add Twitter gadgets to your site

There are tons of Twitter gadgets and new ones are being released every day. The cool thing about Twitter gadgets is that your blog visitors can become your Twitter followers. If your Twitter followers have many followers, chances are that some of these followers will notice you and will join your network. As we already mentioned, building a large and targeted network is key to getting more Twitter traffic to your site.

These are some of the main ways in which you can get traffic from Twitter.

If you are creative and if you monitor what’s going on Twitter and what new Twitter gadgets are released, you will certainly find more ways to drive traffic from Twitter to your site.

The Hasty Way From Post To Google In Scarcely 15 Minutes By Means Of Twitter

Twitter is Maturing?

Twitter is Maturing?
By Andrew M Nathan

Twitter is going through a process of maturing. Just like Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn went through phases of development previously. What is interesting about all of the social media sites is that the moment they gain some maturity, you immediately find people stating that the site is in decline and about to take a major nose dive.

Maybe instead this means that Twitter is maturing, so that the people who have stayed on the site can create deeper relationships with each other than simply relying on playing the numbers game that Twitter has been in the past year.

I find a maturing twitter comforting for those who look for a quality company. Instead of MySpace dying out, the site instead has become a niche spot for rock bands and entertainers. Additionally, unlike the presumed death of Facebook the site has grown from a small college experiment to the site where grandmas are joining by the thousands along with the rest of this country.

The same will happen to Twitter, as it becomes a site for businesses to connect, entertainers to expound upon their day, and techies to congregate. The site is becoming more focused on a niche of people who use it effectively instead of people who fumble along with Farmville games and applications.

I think this is a process that will weed out the time wasters and make Twitter more effective, since only those who appreciate the services will stay, while the driftwood will drift out of Twitter. That to me is a win-win version of Twitter, so I guess the only thing to say is congratulations on growing up Twitter in 2010. It will make you a more effective place to transact business and connect with friends and associates.
